I have wanted to visit Salzburg since I first watched the Sound of Music. It has captured my heart! Nestled against the Austrian Alps, it is as if nature herself has painted a masterpiece – it’s beautiful no matter where you look. It is a captivating city that blends Baroque charm with a rich musical legacy. The birthplace of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and the old part of town is like a special place frozen in time. Salzburg enchants visitors with its UNESCO-listed Old Town, cobblestone streets, historic architecture, and the lush surroundings of the Salzach River.
I finally got the chance to visit Salzburg with my family in 2019, and we fell in love with it! It was even better than I imagined. Exploring the city together was so much fun.
We climbed up to the Hohensalzburg Fortress for a breathtaking view of the city and strolled through Mirabell Gardens, feeling like we were part of a fairy tale. The food was amazing too – we couldn’t get enough of the delicious pastries and hearty Austrian dishes. We couldn’t pass up the chance to go on the Sound of Music Tour, which was an absolute highlight of our trip. It was a journey filled with unforgettable memories, and Salzburg will always hold a special place in our hearts.
Here are the Must-Do Activities while in Salzburg:
Mirabell Palace & Garden: Stroll through the enchanting Mirabell Garden, known for its beautifully landscaped grounds, vibrant flowerbeds, and iconic Pegasus Fountain, featuring a sculpture of the horse, Pegasus, is a work by Kaspar Gras from Innsbruck and was installed in 1913. The Grand Fountain(the fountain pool) is a four-group group of figures by Ottavio Mosto (1690). They symbolize the 4 elements: fire, air, earth and water.
Mozart Birthplace “Hagenauer Haus” at No. 9 Getreidegasse: Immerse yourself in the life of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart by visiting his birthplace. Explore the rooms where the composer spent his early years and feel as if you have personally been transported back to the days of Mozart! The best part is to see the historical instruments, including his violin and clavichord.
Sound of Music Tour: Embark on a Sound of Music Tour to visit the picturesque locations featured in the iconic film. Follow in the footsteps of the von Trapp family as you explore the breathtaking landscapes of the Austrian Alps and relive the magic of this timeless musical.
Hohensalzburg Fortress: a medieval masterpiece perched on a hill overlooking Salzburg. Nothing beat the panoramic views of the city and the surrounding Alps. You can explore the fortress interiors, including museums and exhibits that showcase Salzburg’s rich history.
Makartsteg – Love Lock Bridge: his romantic spot is adorned with colorful padlocks inscribed with messages of affection, symbolizing the eternal bond between lovers. As you stroll along the bridge, you’ll be enchanted by the serene views of the Salzach River and the historic buildings lining its banks. Whether you’re adding your own lock or simply admiring the heartwarming display, the Mozart Love Lock Bridge is a beautiful testament to love’s enduring power in the heart of Salzburg.
