What to Expect on a Hammam (Turkish Bath) in Istanbul

BonBon April 16, 2024 Leave a Comment

We stumbled upon the enchanting world of Hammam during our adventures in Morocco a few years back, and boy, did it leave us spellbound! We did it with our kids (8 and 9 yr old), and the rejuvenating treatments captivated us, making us want to experience it again. So, while in Istanbul, we couldn’t pass up the opportunity to immerse ourselves in this age-old tradition once again. This time, why not go for a bit of history? So we dive into the legendary Hagia Sophia Hurrem Sultan Bathhouse or the Ayasofya Hurrem Sultan Hamami. It preserved its unique structure for 450 years, opened a new era in Turkish Bath architecture, and has the title of the first structure where women and men sections are on the same axis. Our experience was like stepping into history in a world of luxury and pampering fit for an emperor and/or empress!

The dome in the main entrance

Well, before I write further, let me give you a bit of background on Turkish Hammam.

The Turkish hamam embodies a rich fusion of Eastern and Western influences, reflecting Turkey’s unique position at the crossroads of Europe and Asia. Imagine this, transport yourself to a bygone era where Roxelana, the esteemed wife of a Sultan, once sought solace. This hammam, a testament to time for over five centuries, extends a warm welcome to its visitors. What distinguishes it? Its expansive bathing area, a fusion of wood and marble, creates an atmosphere of simple yet luxurious tranquility. The grand dome above, adorned with intricate details, adds a touch of regality, inviting you to relive history in comfort and style.

And if you’re up for a real treat, head over to Ayasofya Hurrem Sultan Hamami. Nestled right between the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia, its location is a sight to behold and trust me, the experience inside is just as amazing!

Here is what to expect when you go to Hammam at Ayasofya Hurrem Sultan Hamami:

Segregation between Men & Women: The bathhouse is segregated into two sections – one for men and the other for women. Each section has a separate entrance on opposite sides. This arrangement ensures that all guests have their privacy and feel comfortable while enjoying the traditional bath experience as per cultural customs.

Dress Code: When you arrive, you’ll be asked to change into a traditional Turkish towel called a “pestemal,” and disposable underwear will be available for your convenience. I had swimwear ready because I wasn’t sure about the whole thing, but I didn’t need to use it. My daughter and I were comfortable enough with the disposable underwear. You can store your clothes securely in the provided lockers before entering the bathing area, which by the way, phones are not allowed. This ensures a safe, comfortable, and traditional experience.

Always keep in mind that the essence of the hammam experience lies in entrusting oneself to the expertise of the tellak or natir, the male or female attendants, who guide visitors through the progressively warmer sections of the bath.

Things to Bring: When preparing to visit a hammam in Istanbul, it’s essential to pack light and thoughtfully. You are welcome to bring your own bathing essentials such as shampoo, conditioner, and soap in case you don’t like what they provide(we actually love what this hammam provide) and/or you have some allergies to certain ingredients. Consider bringing a bathing suit if you prefer to wear one, although traditional hammams typically provide Turkish towels or “pestemals” for modesty. So if you want to experience it fully, then no bathing suit. It is also wise to bring a change of clothes for after your hammam session and any personal toiletries or skincare products you may need. Remember to bring a bag to store your belongings securely and some cash for tipping or additional services. Most importantly, bring an open mind and a spirit of relaxation, ready to immerse yourself in this timeless Turkish tradition.

There are 3 Sections:

  • Cold Room – This is located in the entrance and it has VIP room, changing rooms with security lockers, reception area, massage rooms, and a bar.
Cold room or Locker room – NO Photos allowed beyond this point!
  • Warm Room –  This is the area where you can relax, have some water pored from a gold cup  for about fifteen minutes until your skin is ready for some real good scrubbing.  You can also see part of the old heating system that was originally used in the hammam. Your masseur, of the same gender, will join and begin by using a “kese,” a specialized scrubbing pouch, to cleanse your body. Expect to get rid of all your  dead skin and have a smooth, radiant skin after. However, should you have any reservations or preferences regarding the scrubbing, do not hesitate to communicate them.
  • Hot Room – The large marble massage platform in the hot room lies under the hammam’s dome and is surrounded by both open and private alcoves (halvet). This area will bring you back during the Ottoman Empire times. So, after the scrubbing, you will get to indulge in a luxurious bubble wash and massage. You will be lying on top of the marble göbektaşı the entire time. OMG!!! It was such an incredible experience, something we will forever treasure for sure!

Refreshing Finale: Conclude the session with invigorating cold water poured over your head from a gold bowl.

Post-Treatment Relaxation: Before departing the hamam, you can unwind in the cold room, where you can enjoy traditional Turkish tea. Take this opportunity to savor the entire Turkish bath experience to its fullest.

My girl enjoying some Turkish Tea

We decided to go for the basic package which cost 90 euros. It includes indulgent perks like a bath with a gold-plated bowl, a complete toiletry set, a traditional body scrub, a luxurious bubble-wash massage, and to top it off, a soothing head and neck massage. It’s the ultimate pampering experience!

Feeling Rejuvenated after our Hammam!

Stepping out after our hammam time, we were all grinning from ear to ear, feeling super smooth and clean! The boys didn’t even bother with photos, but after checking our photos, they said it looks exactly the same at the men’s section.  Over all, we had such a wonderful experience!

Note: Please note that during our hammam ritual, There were only four other people during our hammam ritual. Therefore, I’m unable to provide a comprehensive overview of what the experience might be like during peak season. I guess, you need to see it for yourself;)
